With concerns about security, Hampshire Constabulary provided police constables to guard the Mill. Three officers are shown here advertising their presence. c. 1862/63. The date can be fixed fairly accurately as the uniform top hats were replaced shortly afterwards for more practical headgear. The hats shown were reinforced for protection but were top heavy and uncomfortable to wear.
