One famous battle where the Martini-Henry was used to great effect was in January, 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu war. It took place at Rorke’s Drift in South Africa where 150 soldiers successfully defended a supply station against some 4,000 Zulus. 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded. This followed the battle of Isandlwana the previous day when 1,800 well armed but poorly led and badly deployed troops were defeated by Zulus armed with spears and cowhide shields. The British lost over 1,300 dead.
