Brigadier-General Sir Bertram Portal fishing downstream of the bridge in Bridge Street c.1916. The cottage, once the home of the Phillimore family, has since been demolished. John Phillimore tells the story of how his brother threw a sparkler which landed on the thatch. He was so afraid of the consequences that he hid under the bridge. There was no major damage to the thatch but the family could have been made homeless.
