Henry Portal’s business prospered and he expanded by taking over Laverstoke Mill in 1718. In 1724 he obtained the Bank of England contract for banknote paper, a contract which Portals still retains this day. This engraving, which shows the interior of Laverstoke Mill in 1854, appeared in the Illustrated London News.
