1086 was the date of the Domesday Survey which followed the Norman conquest of 1066. At that time the village was located round St Mary’s Church and Court Farm. In 1218 the Bishop of Winchester built a new village, based on a grid system which can still be seen today. Most of the old village disappeared during the Middle Ages. These brick fragments are possibly remains of the original village.
