The picture shows 5 flints which have been used as pot boilers, possibly 2000 years ago. They have been heated in a fire and then placed in a pot of water to heat it up. The effect of heating and rapid cooling of the flints creates a distinctive change in the properties of the stone. It won’t flake any more and if struck it will crumble – particularly if left in the fire too long.
