Colin joined the Royal Navy as an apprentice in 1943 at the age of 16. The photograph was taken on completion of his apprenticeship in 1947 at HMS Caledonia. He went to sea in HMS Sirius as a 5th Class Artificer. During the remainder of his 30 year career he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His job as artificer (mechanical engineer) gave him responsibility for maintaining everything mechanical on his ship. He retired in 1977.
