For centuries a small, simple weir was used to regulate the flow of water into the mill race which flows under the mill. As part of the redevelopment, a substantial modern sluice gate was built. Unfortunately this can get blocked up by weed cut further up stream as part of routine river management. This causes the river level to rise and when it is released the results can be quite spectacular! The law of unintended consequences strikes again.
