Stephen Charles Switzer, known as Charlie. With his horse and cart, Charlie was Overton’s night soil man in the days before main drains, which didn’t arrive until c.1932. His “collections” were tipped into a pit in Waltham Road which, apparently, was noted for its excellent tomatoes.
